MARITAGE (Multicultural ARt and HerITAGE for Development) International is a non-profit global initiative led by First Ladies, women leaders, and influential artistic society, government, and development actors that seek to economically empower female artisan groups in developing countries through collaboration with the public and private sectors. Founded in 2012, MARITAGE presents a global partnership platform to connect the artistic society with international development actors who share the value of multicultural art and heritage as a strategic approach for sustainable development and economic independence for communities around the world. MARITAGE has the potential to improve the livelihood of vulnerable women, their economic empowerment and contribute to overall development.
The mission of MARITAGE is to galvanize support and raise funds for women's health initiatives by connecting public and private organizations that share an interest in improving the livelihood of vulnerable women and contributing to overall sustainable development.
MARITAGE’s first global initiative, launched in partnership with McCann Health, is the Shawl for All Women partnership, which was announced at the 2013 Cannes International Festival of Creativity. The Shawl for All Women is an initiative based on the concept of “MARITAGE Creativity without Borders” created by Ludy Suryantoro, the author and conceptualizer behind the Shawl for All Women movement. A Shawl for All Women will bring together partners from health, beauty and fashion to:
- Generate economic development opportunities for women through the design and sales of shawls, often leveraging partnerships with high fashion partners.
- Raise funds for maternal and child health initiatives, such as Every Mother Counts.
A Shawl for All Women will be officially launched at a high-level gathering of First Ladies and influential women taking place on September 24-25, 2013 in New York, and will coincide with the United Nations General Assembly and New York Fashion Week. The initiative will be supported by McCann Health through a global campaign that will connect partner brands with this global initiative to support women's health and empowerment.
"The shawl is a powerful universal symbol that unifies all women and represents the interrelated themes of art, culture, health and motherhood," said Her Excellency Dr. Christine Kaseba, First Lady of Zambia and a leading advocate of the effort.
